From Knots & Defects
Brooks Bros MDF is completely free from knots, twists and
shake. This means that the full length of the mouldings can be used
without the need for selecting or rejecting pieces and knotting
filler is no longer required. MDF is also harder than conventional
softwoods and less likely to suffer damage before or during installation.
Paint
Finish
Automated computer-controlled coating and drying gives a
fabulous finish. A sealing/priming coat is followed by mechanical
sanding and a second coat of paint. Gentle warm air-drying ensures
the consistently perfect finish in a neutral off-white colour. The
MDF is ready to receive a finishing topcoat of either gloss or emulsion
paint, or it can be finished with a coloured stain.
Doubly
Protected
Brooks Bros MDF is manufactured from specially formulated
moisture resistant medium density fibreboard that meets BS 1142.
To prevent damage when used against wet plaster or in the humid
conditions of kitchens and bathrooms, these mouldings are sealed
all round.
Proven Economy
The building research establishment in its report PT 511 concluded
that conventional softwood mouldings are at least three times more
expensive to finish than MDF. These calculations did not take into
account the savings through reduced wastage and the elimination
of remedial work.
Architectural Mouldings
Moisture resistant medium density fibreboard mouldings- skirting,
architraves, window board and dado- have set new standards of ease
of working and quality of finish. With just a spot of filler over
the fixings and the application of a single topcoat, an outstandingly
smooth and clean finish is achieved.
State of the art production machinery enables Brooks Bros MDF to
be supplied ready primed, ready undercoated and mechanically sanded
to a silken smooth surface finish that must be seen and felt to
be appreciated. It is this surface that ensures a perfect finish
from a single topcoat of paint.
Eliminate callbacks - these mouldings are moisture resistant and
will not twist, crack, warp or shrink so your perfect finish will
stay that way. Irritating and costly callbacks are simply eliminated.
In addition to no knotting, sanding, priming and undercoating, Brooks
Bros MDF is supplied in lengths that are most convenient for builders.
These advantages have convinced many of the UK's biggest and most
cost-conscious builders that the higher initial cost of MDF is more
than offset by hours of time saved and minimal wastage - the building
research establishment reports that conventional softwood mouldings
are three times more expensive than MDF.
MDF Fixings
MDF may be fixed as softwood mouldings. The
long lengths reduce the number of joints and no allowance need be
made for shrinking. There is no need to cross nail mitred joints.
Nailing & Pinning
'Lost head' nails, which reduce the need for filling and making
good, are preferred where appropriate. Fable does not need to be
secured to prevent warping and twisting and can, therefore, be nailed
at up to 900mm centres. If the wall is not uniform, fixing should
achieve conformity to the wall.
To facilitate filling and making good, nailing into the root of
the profile is recommended. When securing taller profiles, fixing
may be made at or near the base of the profile.
When nailing into lightweight blocks either helical/spiral type
fixings can be used or masonry nails angled in opposing horizontal
directions.
Screw Fixing
Can also be screwed with wall plugs in the conventional way.
Adhesives
For dry-lined and other applications where walls are true, Brooks
Bros MDF can be secured with a general-purpose high performance
adhesive. The use of adhesives means no filling or making good is
required.
Filling & Making Good
For best results use nitro cellulose filler or any good quality
non-shrink filler.
